Anime Review: Code Geass

Genres: action, drama, psychological, science fiction, supernatural
Themes: Mecha, Military
I recently got hooked on a new Anime thanks to the December 08 issue of Anime Update. Code Geass is a story of a 17 year old Britannian school boy, Lelouch Lamperouge, who takes on this identity to hide his royal status as the eleventh Prince of the Britannian Empire. Following the assassination of his mother, Empress Marianne, Lelouch’s sister is so traumatised by the event that she loses sight and becomes crippled. Lelouch resents his father, the Emperor, for not preventing his mother’s death and the devastating effect it has had on his sister that he vows to destroy Britannia.
Britannia conquered Japan and renamed it Area 11, stripping all Japanese citizens of their culture, freedom, homeland and the right to be called Japanese. Lelouch becomes entangled in Japanese rebel activity who have stolen a truck from the Britannian military. Further into the drama Lelouch meets an extraordinary young girl who gives him the power of Geass – the ability to control the actions of another individual to do his bidding. With this power Lelouch becomes a masked hero to the Japanese known as Zero. Using his new found ability and the identity of Zero, Lelouch takes on Britannia with the goal of making a happy place for his sister, revenging his mother’s death and giving back to the people the right to be called Japanese – however not his primary motive.
The story has a lot of substance to it that at times it can be hard to follow. It has quite a large political and power element to it as well, I am definitely not a fan of politics in the real world however I was still attracted to the story and it’s intricate mechanics. There are also subtle scenes of love and passion which if you’re someone who likes a powerful, heroic story with a touch of this emotion, it will definitely pull you into it’s world.
I definitely give it the thumbs up and it’s on the list as one of my favourite Anime series.
